Cleaning industry professionals from around the world will attend The ISSA Show North America 2021, scheduled for November 15-18, at the all-new West Building of the Las Vegas Convention Center, in Las Vegas, NV.
Three trade show days, educational and networking opportunities, panel discussions and guest speakers will highlight the annual event. Manufacturers, distributors, facility managers, building service contractors and residential cleaners will come together at this year’s ISSA Show North America for information sharing, relationship building and product innovation. Attendees can expect to discover new solutions for improving efficiencies, skills and profitability, according to ISSA.

■ Face Masks: ISSA Show North America will follow the state of Nevada’s mask policies at the time of the event. The state currently requires masks at all indoor events; and,
■ Cleaning, Disinfection, And Infection Prevention: “This year’s ISSA Show North America is being held at one of the first facilities in the world to receive GBAC STAR™ Facility Accreditation from the Global Biorisk Advisory Council™ (GBAC), a Division of ISSA. The convention center has fulfilled GBAC STAR’s 20 elements for cleaning, disinfection and infection prevention. Additionally, the cleaning contractor for this year’s event, United Services Companies, is a GBAC STAR Accredited Service Provider,” according to ISSA.

Essity Earns Leadership In Sustainability Award For Water Use & Quality From American Forest & Paper Association
Essity, a leading global hygiene and health company, has announced that it received the Better Practices, Better Planet 2020-2021 Leadership in Sustainability Award for Water from the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA). As the national trade association for the paper and wood products industry, AF&PA advocates for a strong and sustainable industry for all of its manufacturer members.
Essity was honored October 28 at the AF&PA 2021 Presidents Forum for its efforts at its Wisconsin manufacturing sites — its paper mill in Menasha and converting facility in Neenah — to reduce water use and significantly improve the quality of water that is discharged back into the environment, known as final effluent. The sites manufacture professional hygiene products sold by Essity’s Tork® brand, including paper towels, napkins and toilet paper.
According to Don Lewis, president, Essity Professional Hygiene, “We all recognize that our industry relies strongly on natural resources — including water — so extra consideration for how we affect the environment is critical. I am proud of our teams for being good stewards of our natural resources — not because we have to, but because it’s the right thing to do.”
In 2017, Essity’s Midwest Operations Environmental team began an effort to reduce phosphorus and total suspended solids (TSS) in the final water effluent at the Menasha paper mill. The improvements led to a 55 percent decrease in total phosphorus discharged and 35 percent decrease in TSS discharged. The team also worked to improve water use at the Menasha mill, which will now be able to recycle up to 30 percent of otherwise discharged water.
At the Neenah facility, the team cut water usage by over 52 percent from a record high in 2017, and by 20 percent over its 2014 baseline, by rebuilding equipment. The site also rerouted all non-contact cooling water away from direct discharge to the river, which eliminated any source of potential thermal impact.
“Our Neenah and Menasha teams have worked tirelessly to achieve Essity’s Sustainability Goals and to maintain our high standards for water use and effluent quality,” said Rob Harvey, Essity regional site manager. “I’m thrilled that their dedication to this project is being recognized by AF&PA and our industry.”

Distributors Focus On Data Recovery Protection As Ransomware Attacks Continue To Rise
Ransomware is exceptionally difficult to guard against, as it changes every day. There are sophisticated attackers constantly looking for ways to profit by stealing a company’s data, holding it for ransom, and then selling it back. Cyber security, in a sense, is very much like home security. You can install as many locks, cameras, and alarms as you want, but ultimately, criminals find new ways to get in.

One significant advantage of the Disaster Recovery system is an elaborate notification process designed to provide immediate alerts if, for any reason, the scheduled backup process has not been successful. This immediate notification allows team members to quickly investigate the issue and assist in resolution, minimizing any loss of data or availability.
“Most people are confident that their data backup technology is just humming away in the background, similar to how a home heating or air conditioning system does. The problem is that these are silent
systems and there is often no effective alarm that tells you that your system is not working correctly,” said McCall. “Notification was a big part of our design for the Disaster Recovery service. Once implemented, the DDI Hardware team is alerted when a backup issue has occurred, and we can take immediate action.”
